Merchant There for 40 Years Dies at Age of 78 Years
Ross L. Strain, retired St. Charles merchant, died Friday, April 1, at a nursing home in Indianola. He was 78 years of age.
Mr. Strain had engaged in the mercantile business in St. Charles for 40 years, prior to his retirement in 1961.
He was a native of Lacona, where he was born March 19, 1888. He was the adopted son of James L. and Luella Strain. He attended the Lacona schools, also working at the Pogue Merchandise store there. Later, with Byron Fogler, he owned and operated stores at Lacona and Melcher, prior to entering military service during World War I.
After World War I he opened a store in St. Charles. He was married March 2, 1921 to Ethel Freeman of Lacona. They operated the St. Charles store for 40 years, until her death in 1961.
He was a member of the Lacona Methodist church, later transferring to the St. Charles church. He was a member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the St. Charles Lions club.
Nearest surviving relatives are a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stierwalt of Lacona, and a nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Curtis of Chariton. He also leaves other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the St. Charles Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Glen W. Lamb of Indianola. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
_________________________Coordinator's note: Although his Iowa Death Certificate says his middle name was "Imel", there is no vital record recorded with that name or any middle name while he was alive. His WWII Draft Registration said he had no middle name.
