Margaret Sophia Olson, 86, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Margaret was born on May 1, 1926, in Van Meter, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Anna (Forrett) Smith. After graduating from Van Meter High School, she married Herbert E. Olson on May 6, 1947, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Margaret was employed with the Urbandale Schools for ten years, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed cooking, music, basketball, and reading.

Margaret was preceded in death her by her husband of 61 years, Herbert Olson; her parents, Alfred and Ann Smith; brothers, Alfred and Robert Smith; and sisters, Agnas Loose, Irene Kelly, Hazel Stewart, Louise Smith, and Alice Hazen.

She is survived by her sons, Gary (Debbie) Olson of Des Moines and Alan (Pam) Olson of Ankeny; and grandchildren, Joy (Nate) Burk of Ankeny, Jacob (Erin) Olson of Waukee, Dylan (Amanda) Olson of Des Moines, Dannette (Nick) Medina of Des Moines, and Deric (Jessica) Pottorff of Des Moines; sister, Mary Ann Dawson of Dallas Center; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
