Rose Jeanette Gifford, 97, went to her heavenly home on Friday, September 7, 2012 at Manor Care in West Des Moines. There will be a Celebration of Rose's life from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McLaren's Chapel.
Rose was born on April 19, 1915 in Miami County, Indiana to Charlie Rinehart Bird and Dora Margaret Engel. She graduated from Lucerne High School in 1933. Rose married James Albertice Gifford on December 15, 1945 in Pulaski County, Missouri. He passed away on April 26, 2005 in Cumming, Iowa.
Rose honorably served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps from 1941 to 1945.
She was a member of the Cumming American Legion Post #562 and a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Norwalk since 1975.
Rose was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest "Rex" Bird, Reed Bird, Russell Gordon Bird, Billy "Bill" Bird; and sisters, Dorothy Viola Bird and Ruth Irene Nethercutt.
She is survived by her son, Jim Gifford of Cumming; daughter, Chris (Roy) Stevens of Des Moines; grandchildren, Ruth (Juan Carlos) Gifford of El Paso, Texas, Jim Stevens of Waukee and Ben Stevens of Des Moines; four great-grandchildren; brother, Charlie "Junior" (Geraldine) Bird of Mishawaka, Indiana and a sister, Betty Joan Shoemaker of Mishawaka, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Iowa Hospice.
