Michael Martin, 81, of Winterset, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Winterset Care Center South.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset Care Center South Activity Fund.

Michael Grant Martin was born Dec. 18, 1930, in Patterson, the son of Charles and Margaret (Aikins) Martin. Mike graduated from Patterson High School in 1950. He married Lois Archer on Oct. 12, 1951, in Maryville, Mo. Mike worked for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines. The couple moved to Louisville, Ky., to help with an ice cream vending business, Merrymobile. They moved back to Iowa where Mike worked Dave Ostrem Imports, and later for Howard Gregory Flying Service. Mike ended his working career with John Deere, retiring after 20 years. Mike was a member of the Patterson Methodist Church, the American Motorcycle Association and the UAW.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Martin of Winterset; a daughter, Teresa Morlan of Des Moines; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Meredith Burns of Davis, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Martin; and a brother, Charles “Pat” Martin.

Michael Grant Martin was born December 18, 1930 in Patterson, Iowa, the son of Charles and Margaret (Aikins) Martin. Mike grew up in Patterson and graduated from Patterson High School in 1950. He married Lois Archer on October 12, 1951 in Maryville, MO at the Presbyterian Church.

After Mike and Lois were married, he worked as a mechanic for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines and later moved to Louisville, Kentucky where the couple worked with Mike’s parents to help with an ice cream vending business, Merrymobile. They moved back to Iowa where Mike worked as a mechanic for Dave Ostrem Imports and after that worked again as an aircraft mechanic for Howard Gregory Flying Service, a subsidiary of the Des Moines Airport. Mike ended his working career with John Deere where he continued to work as a mechanic and retired in December of 1990 after 20 years.

Mike was a member of the Patterson Methodist Church, the American Motorcycle Association and the UAW.

He loved motorcycles, especially Harleys and enjoyed taking trips on them. He also had an interest in trains and airplanes and enjoyed boating and fishing. Mike also liked puzzles, playing board games and poker but more than anything Mike loved his family and any time spent with them.

Michael died September 10, 2012 at the Winterset Care Center South. He was 81.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Martin of Winterset; a daughter, Teresa Morlan (Richard) of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Michael Martin of Des Moines, John (Nicole) Martin of Des Moines, Luke (Kerry) Morlan of Des Moines, Paul (Brittany) Nagla of NC, and Vanessa (Craig) Scott of Des Moines; ten great-grandchildren, Lillian and Noah Martin; Richie, Alexia and Gabriel Martin; Cameron, Cayden and Brooklyn Nagla and Adam, Addeline and Truman Morlan; and a sister, Meredith Burns (Victor) of Davis, CA.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Stephen Martin; and a brother, Charles “Pat” Martin.
