Dr. Craig Saveraid, 59, died unexpectedly of a heart attack while working on his ranch, June 26, 2012. Craig was born in Ames on April 24, 1953, to Herbert and Lorrie Saveraid.
Craig graduated from Adel High School - Class of 1971. He married Marta, his high school sweetheart, in December 1972. He served in the Marine Corps as a military policeman stationed in California. He returned to Iowa to attend Iowa State University, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1984.
After graduation, Craig and Marta opened the DeSoto Veterinary Clinic and a ran a mixed animal practice until selling the clinic in 2003. They moved to their ranch south of Winterset, where Craig continued his equine practice and ran a 200-head cow/calf operation.
Dr. Saveraid was involved in a wide variety of civic, community and professional organizations, including the Block and Bridle Horse Show, Dallas County Fair, ADM School Board and Iowa Veterinary Medical Assocation, among others.
Craig's strong personality and generous spirit touched people throughout the region and in his life.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Marta, his sons Travis (Erika) and Cody (Joanna), his grandchildren Leif, Hanna, Elisabet and Wren, his brother Lee and sister Susan (Bob) Gill, nieces, nephews and many other family and friends.
Following Craig's wishes his body will be cremated. To honor his life a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at his beloved ranch, 2269 310th St., Lorimor.
