Peter Franklin “Frank” Smith
Peter Franklin “Frank” Smith was born at Pekin, Illinois, March 31, 1891, the son of John F. and Mary Melissa (Mutchler) Smith. He passed away at Peoria, Illinois, September 26, 1970 and is buried in the Walnut Cemetery, Banner, Illinois.
He was married at Pekin, August 27, 1910, to Miss Hannah Adelia Looney, the daughter of Michael M. and Addie B. E. (Galbraith) Looney. To them were born three children, Leo Chester, Myrtle Berniece (Smith) Reed, and Orvetta Vivian (Smith) Lovett.
Just after their third child was born in 1915, the family relocated to Madison County, Iowa. Here, Peter continued to work at his trade as a brick mason, working in many areas of the county and state while living at Martensdale, Lorimor and Winterset. He also lived at Ames for a time. Peter had a hand in building many of the brick buildings in and around Peru, Winterset, Patterson, and other Madison county locales.
He later worked as a ‘Grade’ Foreman, building roads, working on the new road and paving of Highway 169. He also worked on the new paving from Patterson into Winterset.
In 1919, the marriage failed and Peter, along with son Leo, moved back to Illinois where he plied his trade in the construction business at many locations throughout Illinois. On April 2, 1945, he married Edith Bohles at Springfield, Illinois. He was married for a third time to Frances Verma (Welty) Humfrey on 2 Feb 1952 at Littleton, Colorado. Eventually, he retired at Peoria, Illinois where he died at the age of 79.
