Mrs. Mary Sullivan Cooney, 83, of Des Moines died of complications of pneumonia Sunday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. A memorial Mass for Mary, who’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, of which she was a member.

Mary was born October 25, 1922 in Kansas City, Kansas. Her parents were George and Ida May (Smith) Krieg.

She was a 1940 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy. During World War II she was a volunteer nurse’s aide and was employed by the Women’s Army Corp at Fort Des Moines and worked at a munitions plant in Hanford, Washington. In 1945, she married the late Lt. Joseph L. Sullivan, a Navy Air Force pilot who later established a dentistry practice in Des Moines. Dr. Sullivan died in 1988.

The Sullivan family moved in 1968 to a farm south of Adel where they raised purebred Angus cattle. Suring the 1970’s and early 1980’s Mary and her family were active in Polk County 4H and the Flying Hooves Drill Team. In 1983, Mary and her daughter Carol moved to Phoenix, AZ. They returned to Des Moines in 1989 when Mary married James B. Cooney, a retired newspaper editor.

Mary was a member of several organizations, including the Holy Trinity Women’s Club, the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary of Iowa, the White Pole Road Questers Club, and the Catholic Women’s League. She formerly belonged to Des Moines Golf & Country Club and enjoyed golf as long as her health permitted. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed embroidering, gardening and shopping year round for Christmas and birthday presents for her family.

In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by three daughters, Carol Sullivan of Pella, Jane (Tom) Howard of Anthem, AZ, and Mary Elizabeth (Bruce) Delehanty of Platteville, WI, and four sons, Michael (Eileen) Sullivan of Omaha, NE, Steven (Nancy) Sullivan of Park City, Utah, Patrick (Peg) Sullivan of St. Charles, and Sean (Becki) Sullivan of West Des Moines. Also surviving are four stepsons, Timothy (Sandi), Kevin (Mollie), Brian (Janice) and Michael (Tomi) Cooney all of Des Moines; and two step daughters, Mary Kate Cooney of Tucson, AZ and Kitty (Bill) Hoye of South Bend, IN. She is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Note: Burial was made in St. Patrick's cemetery.
