DONALD READ, Winterset

Donald Wayne Read, 75, went with happy heart to be with his savior, Jesus Christ.

Don was born Aug. 31, 1936, in Winterset, Iowa, to his parents, Nelson and Addy (Dale) Read. He grew up on a farm and loved his John Deere tractors. He was a sportsman in high school, and loved football and track. He graduated in 1955 and then went into the Marine Corps. He loved being a Marine and served with great honor. After leaving the Corps, he signed up with the US Postal Service. He married Joyce Tripp, and they had four children. They divorced, and later in 1971 he married Anna (Mahana) Belanger, a young mother of two boys and also a mail carrier. They moved from California back to St. Charles, Iowa, near Winterset.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 6, at the Winterset Church of the Nazarene. A luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m., with the memorial following at 1:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to groups that serve veterans and their families.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; children Chuck (Gloria) Read, Dennis (Cynia) Read, Donna (Bob) Ruckman, Shannon (Kim) Read, Terry (Tanya) Read and Denise (Donald) Rink; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers Clifford (Glynnis) Read, Paul (Myrna) Read, Kenneth (Melissa) Read; numerous nieces and nephews; and a horde of aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Addy Read; a sister, Patricia Lou (Read) Calaway; and a brother, Jerald Read.

His family are long-time pioneers of Winterset.
