Kenneth E. Smith, 92, of Indianola, died of a heart ailment Tuesday, April 22, 2000, at Village Health Care Center in Indianola. Services were held April 15 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member, with burial at Indianola IOOF Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Winterset and has lived in Indianola most of his life.
He was the owner of Smith Trucking and Oil Co., a Warren County assessor and city clerk in Indianola before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He had served as mayor of Indianola for three terms and was past president of Iowa State Finance Officers Association, past chairman of Warren County Red Cross, an elder in his church, secretary of the Indianola Planning and Zoning Commission, a member of Indianola Noon Lions Club, council for Civic Agencies , Masonic Consistory, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Ray to serve on a finance committee for the state of Iowa and had received the Simpson College Community Achievement Award in 1981.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; a son Richard of Fairfield; a half brother, Bernard of Indianola; a half sister, LaVaughn Fowlie of Coralville, two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Overton Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Fund at Village Health Care Center in Indianola or his church.
