Hanley F. Jenkins, M.D., West Des Moines

Hanley F. Jenkins, M.D., 88, of West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Saturday morning, April 14, 2012.

He was born February 26, 1924 in Boone Iowa as the second child of William H. and Z. Marie (Jenks) Jenkins. He lived on the Jenkins Family Farm and attended country school until the 8th grade. He then attended Boone High School and graduated in 1940 at age 16. He attended both Boone Junior College and the University of Iowa before being accepted into the Medical College at the University of Iowa. His medical education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. In 1944, the Military took charge of medical schools and he returned to year round medical school, graduating in 1947. Internships were done at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Following this, he entered general practice in Ogden, Iowa. This practice was interrupted by two years in active duty as a flight surgeon for the US Air Force.

On September 19, 1948, he married Marian Arlene Herman at the Country Church outside of Waukon, Iowa. They had five children. In 1956, he began a general surgery residency at Des Moines Veterans Hospital, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and Broadlawns Hospital. He practiced surgery in Des Moines Iowa from 1960 to 1990, with the exception of one year of practice in General Medicine in Whitefish, Montana. He was honored to be the Chief of Staff of Broadlawns Medical Center in 1967, and was the Head of the Surgery Residency for many years. He founded the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Burn Unit in 1985.

Hanley had many lifelong friends from his involvement with Gyro International in Des Moines. He loved the outdoor life, and chose to spend most of his free time outdoors. He enjoyed hiking and camping with his family when they were young. He was very proud of his hunting and fishing skills, and the vegetables he could produce from his garden. He purchased land outside of Truro, Iowa in the 1960's, and lovingly developed it into the family cabin, with an orchard, gardens and lake.

His mother and father; a brother, Walter; and a sister, Rosemary preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; children, Hanley Jenkins II; JoLynn Baltzley and husband, Rod; Phillip Jenkins and wife, Tammy; Patricia Hanneman and husband, Joe; and Todd Jenkins and wife, Julia; grandchildren, Tia Echeveria and husband Ron; Sarah Spencer and husband, Brad; Nathan Jenkins and wife, Kristen; Ryan Baltzley and wife, Sarah; Adam Hanneman; Jacob Jenkins and wife Kaitlin; Alex Hanneman; and a brother, William Jenkins II.
