Avis J. Gifford, 85, of 1520 Hull Ave., died of a heart attack Monday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Winterset City Cemetery.

Mrs. Gifford was born in Columbia and had lived in Des Moines for 25 years. She was a retired schoolteacher in Madison County. She was a member of Christian Non-Denominational Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilynn Miller of Des Moines; a son, Argyle of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Myrtle Brown of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
