Charles “Max” Gebhardt, Van Meter

Services for Charles “Max” Gebhardt, 74, Van Meter, who died Sunday, Sept. 4, of a heart attack at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, were held Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery near DeSoto.

Born in Blockton, Iowa, on Dec. 19, 1913, he was the son of John and Josie Gebhardt. He had lived in Van Meter since 1964. He had also lived in the Mt. Ayr and Conway areas prior to moving to Van Meter.

Mr. Gebhardt was a retired farmer and was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel, the Van Meter American Legion, the Community Club, Men’s Thursday Pitch Club and the Carry-In Club, all of Van Meter; was a former Van Meter school board member and a former 4-H Club leader.

He married Mary Jean Baker on Nov. 5, 1955 at Creston.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Ronald of Van Meter and wife Debbie; daughters, Sharon Braden of Macedonia and husband Jim; Karen Perez of Austin, Texas and husband David; Jane Donati of Des Moines and husband George; and Rita Gebhardt of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Harris of Clarinda; and three grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, a sister and a twin sister.
