MRS. ANGELINE GUYE VANWY , Aged 81, Passes Away,
Lived in the County 74 Years

Mrs. Angeline VanWy was born in Sullivan county, Indiana, Aug. 23, 1839, and near the completion of hr 81st year quietly and peacefully passed away last Sunday morning, July 25. Mrs. VanWy was a daughter of that well known pioneer family, which figured so prominently in the first settlement of Madison county.

Samuel Guye lived near Terre Haute, Ind., and about the time Iowa became a state, emigrated with his large family, first to Missouri, where he remained but a short time, and then to that beautiful ridge of timber and prairie, which overlooks Winterset from the north. This is usually regarded as the most characteristic pioneer home, and the Guyes as the most characteristic pioneer people of Madison county.

There were of the family, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Guye, and the following children: James, George, Huston, Mariah, Mary, Elizabeth, Angeline and later Riley and Albert D., the latter being by a second wife. James Guye died several years ago and George passed away only a few weeks ago; Huston still lives in Des Moines, Mariah became the wife of Mr. Luddington, Mary married Mr. Evans and Elizabeth became Mrs. Mills. All of these have passed away. Riley Guye is still living, while Albert was continuously occupied and tilled the old pioneer farm, where he was born, for more than a half century. Both of his parents passed away when he was but two years old, and the sister, Angeline, became a mother to the orphaned boy. She has been in the home all these years and in the capacity of counselor, companion and friend, has ever been one of the attractions of that beautiful and happy home.

On April 22, 1862, Angeline was married to Henry VanWy, who was for many years known as the leading stock buyer and shipper of the county. He died April 29, 1898. She Has continuously lived at the old pioneer home for about 75 years, longer possibly than any other person who lives or has lived in the county; first as a young girl; then as foster mother of the younger brother; then as the wife of Mr. VanWy; then lastly as the honored and loved adviser and faithful friend of the wife and children of her former orphaned brother. Her life was most beautiful and her example one worthy to be patterned after. She was known and will long be remembered throughout the whole neighborhood as a friend and comforter in times of affliction. Always ready to sympathize with the afflicted and help the needy.

Mrs. VanWy was a professor of the religion of Jesus Christ and for more than half a century, a member of the Baptist church. During the pastorate of Rev. O. F. Conger, there were revival meetings held at the Guye school house, at which time and place she was converted, and united with the church. For all the years since that time, that old school house had special attraction for her and throughout all those years, religious services have been held there. Till recently, she always was among the number who gathered within its consecrated walls. The old school house was torn down and a new one built, but her veneration for that sacred spot did not chance with the change of preachers, denomination or buildings.

Mrs. VanWy enjoyed remarkably good health throughout her long and busy life, until about three weeks ago, and when disease did seize upon the tired and careworn body, no regrets nor complaints came from the patient and queenly spirit which animated it for so many busy and useful years.

The funeral services were held at the residence of Albert D. Guye, Tuesday, July 27, conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens. Burial at the Winterset cemetery.
