MRS. CHARLOTTE GROUT

Charlotte Winchell was born at Randolph, Portage county, Ohio, Jan. 29, 1836 and died in Winterset, May 15, 1920. She was married to J. C. Grout Dec. 25, 1854. After their marriage, they resided awhile in Illinois and Missouri, and in 1860, removed to Dallas county, Iowa.

Early in the war of the rebellion, Mr. Grout enlisted in the 39th Iowa Infantry, leaving his wife and several small children at their home in Dallas county. The mother had the same experience as many other mothers, who, without any means, succeeded in rearing a family of small children, while the father and husband was serving his country along the tiresome marches and bloody battlefields of the south. It was in the neighboring county during those trying times that Mrs. Grout learned the lessons of economy and self-reliance and the endurance of hard physical labor which characterized her entire subsequent life.

When Mr. Grout came home from the war, the family remained there until 1872, when they came to this county and continued to reside near Winterset until the time of his death, with the exception of some three or four years spent in Kansas. Since the death of her husband, Grandmother Grout has resided with her children. Some few years ago she met with an accident, from the effects of which she never fully recovered. Mrs. Grout was the mother of seven children, four sons and three daughters. The daughters passed away several years ago. One son, George died over a year ago from the effects of an accident, while visiting in California. The three remaining are: Edward of Winterset, at whose home the mother passed the last days of her life; Fred M., of Pasadena, Calif., and Henry of Lamar, Colo. There also remain two step-daughters, Mary Thomas of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Rachel Bauer of Seattle, Wash.; the later of whom has so patiently and lovingly administered to her during the past few years of loneliness and suffering. There are also 15 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, mostly living in and about Winterset.

Mrs. Grout, with her husband, united with the Methodist church when living in Dallas county, and when they came to this county, they united with the U. B. church at Providence, which is in the immediate neighborhood where they lived for a number of years. On coming to Winterset several years ago, Grandma united with the M. E. church during Rev. Hohanshelt's pastorate, and though unable to attend the public services of late years, she remained true to her church home, enjoyed happy religious experiences, and passed away with bright hopes of a future life.

The funeral services were held at the home of W. H. Blake, Sunday, May 16 at 3 p.m., Rev. Jackson Giddens officiating. Burial was at the Winterset cemetery.
