Mary E. Hogan

Corning and vicinity lost one of its long time and beloved citizens last Thursday morning, in the passing of Mrs. John Hogan. Her entire life was one of cheerfulness, even during extreme suffering. Many will deeply miss her inspiring presence, her kindly and steadfast devotion. To know her was to love her, and the memory of her helpful ways, and deep faith, will be a continual inspiration to family and friends.

Mary E. Morris was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Morris, born on December 21, 1867, on a farm 12 miles northeast of Winterset, Iowa.

She was married to John Hogan on January 18, 1897, in St. Patrick's Church, a rural parish in Madison County, Iowa, and at once moved to a farm in Mercer Township, now operated by their son, where they lived until three years ago when they moved to their present home in Corning.

Mr. and Mrs. Hogan had six children, those living are Mrs. Derwood S. Gilmore of Riverside, California, Mrs. Thomas C. Flanagan of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. Peter A. Curry of Red Oak, Iowa, and Albert of Corning, Iowa.

Aloyoius (Bud) died March 27, 1938, and their first child, a son, died in infancy.

Mrs. Hogan was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha last March and after five weeks was moved to her daughter's home. She was able to be moved to her own home in Corning in August and after a few weeks was able to attend Sunday Mass and visit her neighbors. She became bedfast about a month ago and gradually grew weaker. She kept a keen interest in all things and conversed with her family and friends until a few hours before God called her to a well earned reward.

Mrs. Hogan's greatest happiness in life came from doing and giving to others, especially husband, children and her children's families.

Her seven grandchildren are Denny Flanagan in U. S. Training School at Ames, Iowa, Mary Catherine and Ann Flanagan of Omaha, John Curry of Red Oak and Mary Clare, John and Patricia Ann Hogan of Corning.

Mrs. Hogan is survived by two sisters, and one brother, being Mrs. John Swift of Cumings, Iowa, Mrs. William Hall of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Patrick Morris of Cumings, Iowa.

Requiem High Mass was sung by Father James Wilson of St. Columbans, Nebr., at St. Patrick's Church at ten o'clock Friday morning, Dec 8th. On the altar were Father M. J. Powers, of Corning, Father William Doyle, of Imogene, Iowa and Father Edward Allen, of Chinese Mission Society at St. Columbans, Nebraska. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery.

Out of town relatives and friends, in addition to her immediate family attending the funeral were: Sister Mary Clotilda of Centerville, Iowa; Sister Mary Rosalin of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. John Swift and Cyril Swift of Cumings, Iowa; Mrs. J. M. Morris of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. P. J. Cunningham, Mrs. J. F. Monaghan and J. P. Monaghan, all of Winterset, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Monaghan and son Billy of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; C. W. Hogan and son Donald Hogan, Greenfield, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Damian Hogan of Creston, Iowa; Misses Marcella Brennan, Helen Proulx, Lucille Olson, Blanche Pendleton and H. E. Westerfield of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Mathilda Schmid, Mrs. Harold Honanshelt, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Palmquist, Mrs. and Mrs. D. C. Bergren, all of Red Oak, Iowa.
