ROBERTA (WYNKOOP) HINDMAN

Roberta (Wynkoop) Hindman, 91, passed away peacefully at the Westview Care Center in Indianola on Wednesday evening, March 21, 2012. Her funeral service will be held at the Indianola First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m. There will be a luncheon at the church immediately following the service, and then the burial at the Winterset Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 26, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Indianola First United Methodist Church or to Westview Care Center.

Roberta was born in Madison County, Iowa, on July 11, 1920, to Zenis and Minnie (McComb) Wynkoop. She joined three siblings, Marian, Avory, and Kenneth. Even though she grew up in the Depression, she always talked of what a wonderful childhood she had. She married a handsome neighbor boy named Raymond Hindman on February 23, 1945. They were blessed with two children, Steven and Patti. After the children were born, they made a bold move out of their comfort zone in Madison County to a new job for Raymond in Warren County. Before long, they were buying their first farm near Milo and starting their own dairy herd. Roberta was a hard worker and throughout their life together she worked side by side with him in everything from dairy farming to selling life insurance. She also worked for many years at Younkers and later at Beymers Jewelry in Indianola selling fine jewelry.

Roberta had a strong Christian faith and during the farming years she was very involved at the Milo Methodist Church. After moving to town, she enjoyed fellowship and serving in the Indianola First United Methodist Church. She and Raymond would often tell of how they met Jesus as their Lord and Savior, together at a small country church named Fairview when they were in their early 20’s.

Roberta had many friends and a loving family who will miss her feisty spirit. She leaves behind a son, Steven (Edie) Hindman, and a daughter, Patti (Jerry) Murphy, as well as 6 grandchildren: Laura (Terrell) Murphy, Deidre (Ryan) Brown, Ryan (Sandy) Murphy, Shannon Murphy, Kristin (Paul) Coffelt, and Kristine (Chad) Burgwald.

Roberta got much joy out of her grandkids over the years and in her later years she always enjoyed the Dozen great-grandchildren whenever they came around. She is also survived by many friends, nieces, nephews, and other family members. Roberta was preceded in death by Raymond, her loving husband of 57 years, as well as her parents and siblings.

Over the last four years, Roberta battled with Alzheimer’s while being cared for by the many loving people at the Westview Care Center.
