PEARL LOIS SCHAFER

Pearl Lois Schafer, 92, of rural Dexter, Iowa passed away Monday, February 6, 2012 at Care Center South in Winterset. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 10, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the church. Burial will follow the services in the Dexter Cemetery.

Pearl Lois Schafer, 92, died Monday, February 6, 2012 at Care Center South in Winterset. Funeral service tribute was held Friday, February 10, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter with Pastor Jeffrey Keuning officiating. Cheryl Wichtendahl provided special music including “Beautiful Savior,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” and “Rock of Ages.”

Bearers were Cody Schafer, Charlie Lenze, David Marsh, Daryl Scar, Larry Dahl, Nathan Greiner, and Danny Lenze.

Burial was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter.

Pearl was born November 13, 1919 on the family farm near Casey to Fred Clarence and Mathilda Wilhelmine Schmeling Dahl. The family lived on the family farm outside the Casey area before making their home on a farm south of Dexter. She graduated from Dexter High School with the Class of 1934.

Pear was united in marriage to Peter “Pete” Henry Schafer on February 2, 1941 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. She worked at Drew’s Candy Store in Dexter, the Ben Franklin store in Stuart, and Younkers Department Store in Des Moines before being employed at the Community Care Center in Stuart for over 20 years. Pearl raised chickens and sold eggs for many years.

Pearl was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. She was very active within the church for many years, and belonged to the Ladies Aid. She loved gardening, collecting recipe cards, music, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mathilda Dahl; her husband, Pete Schafer on March 26, 1995; siblings, Earl, Fred Jr., and John Dahl, and Arlene Orton and Bessie Rigdon, and one grandson, Travis Schafer.

Survivors include her children, Shirley (John) Gough of Greensboro, N.C., Sherry Schafer of Bellingham, Wash., and Eugene (Vicky) Schafer of Dexter; grandchildren, Katherine Braswell, Benjamin Gough, Cody Schafer, and Brook Lenze, and great-grandchildren, Claire, Colter, Mason, Chelsea, Carter, and Seth.

Johnson Family Funeral Home of Dexter was in charge of professional arrangements.
