MRS. HANNAH J. MACK

The clarion call ”Come unto me all you that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” has been heard and responded to by one of the most admired and loved of Grand River township's oldest residents.

At 11:15 a.m. Feb. 9, 1920, Mrs. Hannah J. Mack passed away, having answered the above call, which was given to her in a vision, just a week previous to her going, in which she heard the distinct voice and saw the angelic form of the messenger beckoning to her to “come unto him” as he stood upon a river bank.

As she heard the words, her face lighted up with a smile and she repeated the words, as spoken to her by the heavenly messenger. And calling all the loved ones and friends by name who were at her bedside, she bade all “goodbye” urging all to live devoted Christian lives and was then ready to go, but God spared her yet another week.

While her last illness was attended with the most agonizing suffering, never a murmur came from her lips and her faith never wavered for a moment. She often spoke of how much her Lord had suffered for her and would then repeat 2 Cor. 4:17 - “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

Mrs. Mack was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, Sept. 22, 1841, and came to Grand River township, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Bonham, in November, 1857. She was married to J. H. Mack, Aug. 22, 1858. They settled on a farm in the northeast part of Grand River township, where they lived for about two years and then moved to the farm four miles southeast of Macksburg, where they lived until Dr. Mack laid out the town of Macksburg, in 1873, where he built a home to which they moved in the summer of 1874, where she has lived since.

She was converted when 10 years of age, and united with the M. E. church, of which she has been a faithful and loyal member, never faltering or failing in her known duty to the church or to her God. Having an intense hunger in her heart for a deeper experience she sought and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit according to Act. 2:4, in December, 1915. From this time on, God was more real to her and the word of God revealed and made plainer to her. And the constant cry of her soul was that God would pour out His spirit in its fullness upon the people of Macksburg and community.

She leaves four daughters: Mrs. Sarah A. Farnsworth of Wichita, Ks; Mrs. Allie M. Herren of Macksburg; Mrs. Onie B. Hixson, Mrs. Artie Townsend; two brothers: George and Samuel Bonham, both of Lorimor; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of friends who feel their loss deeply.

She selected for her funeral text 2 Cor.-5:1, together with the reading of the 23rd Psalm.

Rev. G. T. Andrews of Villisca, a former pastor, conducted the funeral services, after which she was laid to rest by the side of husband, Dr. J. H. Mack, in the Moon cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn.
