JANE CLEARWATER

Jane Clearwater, daughter of John and Catherine Swift, was born near Greencastle, Ind Aug. 17, 1831 and died Dec. 24, 1919, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma L. Carey in Winterset, Iowa.

In June, 1848 she married Henry Clearwater of Farmer City, Ill., a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal church. They made their home in and near this city for several years, including the period of the Civil War, in which he served three years.

Mother Clearwater's last 42 years were spent in Ida and Madison counties. She was converted in youth and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in which she lived a faithful Christian life. Six children were born to this union, three daughters and three sons. Her husband, three children, Mrs. Mary Adams of Lohrville, Iowa; Rev. H. P. Clearwater of Vermillion, S.D.; and Edgar S. Clearwater of the Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., preceded her in death. She was a loving wife, steadfast and true as a mother, friend and neighbor.

The surviving family are: Rev. J. E. Clearwater and Mrs. Emma L. Carey of Winterset; and Mrs. Jennie Terhune of Ida Grove, 12 grand children and 8 great grand children.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Emma L. Carey in Winterset, conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens, pastor of the Methodist church and the remains sent to Galva, Iowa for burial.
