OBITUARY

John Holliday Junkin, second son of James Law and Rebecca Lowther Junkin, was born January 23, 1862, in Warren county near Monmouth, Illinois, and died July 23, 1941, at Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 79 years and six months. He had been ill for a week with a heart disorder.

He attended the rural schools of Warren county, and in the spring of 1880 moved with his parents to South Dakota, where they located near the small town of Firesteel. The family remained here only until fall when they moved to Madison county, where Mr. Junkin had resided continuously for 61 years.

James Law Junkin and his sons rented a farm in Penn township known as the Ritchie Ranch. Here they lived until 1890, when J. H. Junkin bought a farm near Penn Center.

On December 15, 1898, he was united in marriage to Margarete Helen Kail. To this union were born two daughters, Lucile Schalkle and Gayle Junkin, both of Earlham. In 1914 the family moved to Earlham.

A man of unquestionable integrity, energetic and industrious, Mr. Junkin had been connected with many worthy civic, municipal, and religious enterprises. His judgment and opinions were respected by all who knew him.

At the time of his death he was mayor of Earlham, having served in that capacity for eight years. Prior to that time he was a member of the town council for 12 years.

He had been an active member of the Earlham Presbyterian church for almost fifty years, and served on the building committee when the present church was constructed.

On May 1, 1891, Mr. Junkin was initiated into the Iowa Order of Odd Fellows, of which organization he was a member at the time of his death. He had been Grand Patriarch and District Deputy of the I.O.O.F. camp, as well as fulfilling practically all offices in the local lodge.

He also served on the school board of the Earlham district for ten years. During his tenure consolidation went into effect and the present school was built.

Surviving besides his daughter are two brothers: Frank, with whom Mr. Junkin was associated in farming for many years; and Grant, Humboldt, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Mac Watson of Monmouth, Illinois, and his granddaughter, Margaret Sue Schalkle.
