VIRGINIA HOLMES, Waukee

Virginia Holmes, 93, passed away January 24, 2012, at the Village of Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

Virginia was born in Des Moines on July 31, 1918, to Frank and Nancy Childers. Her father pursued various business interests, giving Virginia the opportunity to spend her youth going to school and living in both Des Moines and St. Charles, Iowa, where she graduated from high school.

Virginia worked for the Polk County Assessor for over twenty years. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church for most of her adult life. Virginia enjoyed cooking, traveling, walking, playing cards and visiting with her many friends. Most importantly, she loved caring for and spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her loving spirit, dogged determination and joy of family.

Virginia married Harold Holmes and after 74 years of marriage, Harold survives Virginia today. Also surviving are son, David (Judy); granddaughters, Melinda (James) Ellwanger and Carrie (Jason) Henderson; great-granddaughter, Zoe Henderson; great-grandsons, Jess Ellwanger and Fischer Henderson; step- granddaughter, Suzanne (Neil) Savage; step great-granddaughter, Caitlin Savage; step great-grandson, Fraser Savage; and many additional family members and friends, including Dr. Ann Dew.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012, at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel, 801-19th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
