INFANTILE PARALYSIS VISITS WINTERSET

One Fatality Occurred This Week; Three Other Cases Reported

Four cases of infantile paralysis have occurred in Winterset within the past week, one of them resulting fatally.

Robert Cummins, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Cummins, died at the state hospital in Iowa City Monday. He was the second boy in the Cummins family to be stricken with the disease.

Robert became ill last Thursday and paralysis set in last Saturday. His was the most deadly type, in which the paralysis affected the lungs. He was rushed to Iowa City and place in an iron lung but died late Monday.

His 4-year-old brother, Kenneth Cummins, was the first to contract the disease. He became ill Sept. 5, and paralysis set in last Wednesday. It affected only his legs. The attending physician reports that he is now out of danger, but the paralysis in one leg is complete.

Mortuary

Robert Dale Cummins, son of Eric and Opal Cummins was born Oct. 29, 1922, at Peru, Madison county. Robert passed away at the Iowa City hospital, Tuesday, Sept. 12th, after a brief illness. He had spent all but two years of his life near Winterset, and these two years were spent at Savannah, Mo.

Robert was always a considerate son and brother, thinking of his brothers and sisters.

He leaves to mourn his death his father and mother, two brothers, Richard and Kenneth, and three sisters, Doris and Phyllis of Des Moines, and Shirley at home. One sister, Neva, preceded him in death Oct. 2, 1934.

Private funeral services were held last Friday afternoon and burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
