ELEANOR SAWHILL, Winterset

Eleanor Sawhill, 100, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2012 at Winterset Care Center North.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, January 22nd at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset with a visitation held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to AmVets (American Veterans) 2818 5th Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50313.

Mary Eleanor Sawhill was born March 6, 1911 on the family farm in Winterset, to John and Flora (Ledlie) Sawhill. She attended country school until the family moved to Des Moines in 1924. She attended North High School, graduating in 1930.

Eleanor loved children, especially babies. For many years she tenderly cared for children in the nursery at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, of which she was a member for 85 years. She worked at Dilley Manufacturing Company for 35 years, retiring at the age of 92. She lovingly cared for her parents and sister, Iola, meeting their needs and serving them in many ways until their passing.

She enjoyed watching sports, bowled for many years and enjoyed meeting her friends at AmVets on 5th Avenue. Holidays were special to her. Every Christmas many relatives gathered at her home for a large meal and a time of opening presents.

Eleanor will be greatly missed by her sister, Mabel Sawhill of Maryland and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Harold and Wilbur; and a sister, Iola.
