Page 1Death of Mrs. J. E. SMITH
On Thursday evening, Jan. 23, Mrs. Jennie Morrell Smith passed away at her home on East Jefferson street because of a total collapse of the nerves. Since the death of her younger daughter, Miss Francene, in November Mrs. Smith's intimates had noted that a breakdown was approaching but they had no apprehension as to its deep seated nature. Just eleven weeks after her daughter's death, Mrs. Smith was laid to rest at the same hour on Sunday morning as was Miss Francene, with simple brief services conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens.
Her character was well drawn by one who had known her for years, in the statement that “she was as true as steel, the truest person I have ever known.” Affectation and sham had no part in her life. Her friends were grappled to her soul with hoops of steel, for once she established a friendship, that relation was never dropped through carelessness or trivial misunderstandings. Her life was consecrated to her family and friends and her tender heart made her genuine sympathetic in every need.
The loss of daughter, wife and home in so short a time, will bring to Mr. Smith, the deepest sympathy of his wide circle of friends. His remaining daughter, Mrs. Lois Crann and her husband, J. H. Crann of Elmhurst, Ill., assisted in caring for their mother during her illness.
Mrs. Smith held devoted allegiance to her church, the Methodist, and was a beloved member of the Current Topic club.
