Personal Items from Van Meter

PNEUMONIA ENDS LIFE OF T. I. KILLAM HERE SATURDAY

T. I. Killam died at his home here about 7:30 Saturday morning August 12th. Mr. Killam had been in ill health since Feb. 1938, but the last few months he had been better and able to get about some. His final illness of two weeks terminated in pneumonia. He was the last of a family of six children, four sons and two daughters.

Mr. Killam was born in Clayton county, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1856 and was nearly 83 years of age at the time of his death. When just a small boy he came with his parents to Winterset, his father bought the farm south of Van Meter, which is now owned and occupied by Herman Radke.

Mr. Killam married Minerva Smith of Winterset, Nov. 1879. They lived on a farm in this vicinity until 1881 when they moved to St. Charles where Mr. Killam was in the lumber business for about twenty-five years.

Mr. Killam’s wife died in 1922 and in 1927 he and his daughter, Miss Myrtle Killam came to Van Meter where they have resided since. He carried the mail for about ten years.

Mr. Killam is survived by his daughter, Miss Myrtle Killam two sons, C. LeRoy Killam of Van Meter and Earl D. Killam of Indianola. A daughter, Mabel, died at thirteen years of age and a son, Carl, died when one and one-half years old. He also leaves eight grandsons, nine granddaughters and two great grandchildren.

A short service was held at the Fisher funeral home at one o’clock Tuesday afternoon after which the body was taken to St. Charles where a service was held at three o’clock at the Methodist church.

The Rev. W. L. Hawn of the Van Meter Methodist church conducted the services. His granddaughters, the Misses Ethlyn, Arlene and Helen Killam sang, and Mrs. Lloyd D. Fisher sang a solo. Mrs. Lloyd C. Hulse accompanied them.

The following grandsons served as pallbearers: Wilton Killam of Rippey, Carl Warren and Edward Killam of Van Meter, and Robert, John and Phillip Killam of Indianola.

Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

News of Interest from St. Charles

Friends here late Saturday evening received word of the death of T. I. Killiam a few hours previous at his home in Van Meter. Mr. Killiam came to St. Charles about fifty years ago and for many years was in the lumber and coal business wit J. N. Smith. Later he retired and several years later moved to Van Meter which was his home until his death.

The surviving members of his family are two sons, C. L. Killiam of Van Meter, and Earl of Indianola, and one daughter, Miss Myrtle, with whom he made his home, and sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A short service was held at the home in Van Meter Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock and at 3 o’clock the funeral service was conducted at the Methodist church in St. Charles with burial in the St. Charles cemetery beside his wife and two children, Mabel and Carl who preceded him in death many years ago.

Funeral services for T. I. Killam of Van Meter were held in the Methodist church in St. Charles last Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Hawn of Van Meter, and assisted by Rev. Smith of St. Charles. Many relatives attended the services among whom were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Dewit Killam of Sanborn, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Killam and baby of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Killam and family, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Brooker, Mrs. Lizzie Fisher, Loyd Fisher, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hultz of Van Meter, Paul Killam and family and Jennie Miller of Indianola, Mrs. Buell Leinard, Mr. and Mrs. W. TIMOTHY KILLAM SUCCUMBS AT 83

Was Well Known Farmer and Former Business Man Of Madison County

Funeral services for Timothy I. Killam, 83 year old Madison county resident, who died Saturday at his home in Van Meter, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church in St. Charles. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

T. I. Killam was born in Clayton county, August 29, 1856, the son of Timothy I. and Henrietta Billings Killam. They moved to Winterset when Timothy was about 10 years of age where he lived for about five years then moving to a farm in Jefferson township where he grew to manhood.

He was married to Minerva Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Smith of Lincoln twp., November 7th, 1879. They lived on a farm in Jefferson township until moving to St. Charles in 1891 where Mr. Killam entered the mercantile business which he conducted for many years. Upon retiring from the mercantile business he became active in farming. Following the death of his wife on March 9, 1922, he and his daughter Myrtle moved to Van Meter where he has since resided.

He is survived by three children, Myrtle Killam of Van Meter; Leroy Killam of Jefferson twp. and Earl D. Killam of Indianola.

He was the last of a family of six children, his brother, Clinton, dying nearly 2 years ago.
