Elizabeth Pearl Stribling, daughter of Rev. John W. and Emeline Horton Stribling was born near Bear Creek July 29, 1883. She was a birthright member of the Friends Church in which she remained throughout her life and for which she had a remarkable devotion and love, retaining always a keen interest in its affairs.

When she was a small child, the family moved to Earlham, which was her home, with the exception of brief periods of resident in West Branch, Iowa, and Long Beach, California until she was taken to Des Moines in 1927 for medical care.

Pearl was an unusual child, possessed of a brilliant mind, a vivacious personality and a love for people, which endeared her to the community and made her a leader in the affairs of the school and church. As a girl her ambition often led her to overtax her physical strength, which was always limited. Shortly after her graduation from the Academy in 1901, she was overtaken with illness, which ultimately led to invalidism.

Although confined to her home many years, her keen intellect, originality, sense of humor, with knowledge of current affairs and of people, attracted many to her bed side, so that her circle of friends exceeded that of most active people. They are scattered throughout the United States from coast to coast and extend to foreign countries and include among others, many of those most active in the work of Friends.

In spite of her own suffering which grew increasingly intense, she was always thoughtful of others, who were ill or in trouble, and remembered them with messages and tokens of sympathy.

During her residence at the Methodist hospital, she kept closely in touch with other patients, especially those from her home town.

She was released from her suffering Nov. 6, 1932 having been preceded by her father, mother, brother James and sister Minnie Elfleta Hoskins. She leaves to mourn her three brothers, Oscar and Fred, of Paton, Iowa, and Earl, of Des Moines, nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

SUFFERING IS ENDED FOR PEARL STRIBLING

Former Well Known Earlham Woman, Invalid 29 Years, Passed Away Sunday in Des Moines. Funeral Services Here Friday Afternoon.

Long years of patient suffering were ended Sunday afternoon when Miss Pearl Stribling, well loved former Earlham woman, quietly slipped into that land where there is no pain and no night. For 29 of her 50 years of life she had been confined to a narrow bed, yet her indomitable courage was steadfast to the end.

Miss Stribling became an invalid in her young girlhood while a student in Earlham Academy. She resided here many years with her mother and when Mrs. Stribling passed on, was removed to Des Moines. There she has received treatment at a number of hospitals and private sanitariums, to no avail. It was at one of the latter that death came as a merciful messenger to release her from further suffering.

The scope of Miss Stribling’s friendships extended throughout the width and breath of the land. Despite the afflictions which prevented her participation in a normal life, she had a magnetic personality that drew and attracted friends from all walks of life. Her list of correspondents contained many names of world-wide repute.

Funeral services for Miss Stribling were tentatively arranged for today but later were postponed until tomorrow. They will be held at two o’clock from the Earlham Friends Church. Rev. Moses Mendenhall, former pastor here and now pastor of Friends Yearly Meeting, will be in charge.
