Dies in Colfax

H. C. Leighton, a former resident of Winterset, died at his home in Colfax Friday, January 2d, from diabetes. Mr. Leighton will be remembered by our older citizens as a member of the dry goods firm of Bates & Leighton, who during the 70s did the leading dry goods business of the city in the room now occupied by G. H. Garrett.

Mr. Leighton was 68 years of age, and at the time of his death was assistant cashier of the Colfax Citizen’s Bank of which M. B. Wheelock was cashier. Mrs. Leighton was a sister of our old townsman, the late S. B. Wheelock who died in Colfax recently.

Mr. Leighton was a man of fine character and exemplary habits. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and the world was better his having lived in it.
