Death of a Pioneer Woman

Mrs. M. J. Pickard, for many years a resident of Susanville, died at Chico, Cal., Saturday, January 20, 1912. Her death was not unexpected as she has been afflicted for some time with an incurable disease. The remains were brought to Susanville for interment Monday, and Tuesday last taken from the Church undertaking establishment to their final resting place in the local cemetery.

Mary Jane Brinson was born in Indiana January 21, 1845, removed with her parents while quite young to Wintersett (sp), Iowa, where she lived until her marriage to Thomas W. Pickard, May 9, 1862. The day following her marriage she started with her husband for California and arrived in Honey Lake Valley on the 26th day of September, 1862.

Mrs. Pickard was a resident of this valley and adjoining sections for forty years or more, leaving here in 1899 to join her husband in British Columbia, where she lived until his death which occurred October 7, 1907. Since this time she has lived alternately with her children in various portions of the state.

Mrs. Pickard was the mother of four children, all of whom we believe were born in this place. Sarah A., now Mrs. L. E. Winchester of Susanville; Clarence A., now deceased; Edwin S., now publisher of the Argus at Adin, and Effie M., now Mrs. Van Riper. She leaves also a sister, Mrs. Annie Breeden of Florence, Nebraska, and numerous grandchildren.

The funeral took place as stated above last Tuesday afternoon. Brief services were conducted by Rev. W. J. Carter at the grave, the burial service of her Church having been held at Chico. A trio composed of Miss Flora Mehl and Messrs Buckhout and Nash furnished the songs, and the entire service was simple and affecting.
