J. R. Colvin

J. R. Colvin died at his home in Winterset Wednesday morning, June 3, at the age of 63 years, 2 months, 18 days.

Jacob Rice Colvin, son of George and Fannie Colvin, was born at Southwest City, Missouri, March 15, 1873. When a young man he moved with his parents to Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

March 7, 1894, he was united in marriage with Ollie Frazier. To this union were born three children a son dying in infancy. In 1904 he drove a covered wagon to Iowa, bringing his family and settling in Madison county, west of Winterset.

In 1896 he joined the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 91 of Siloam Spring, Arkansas, and ahs been an active and interested member ever since. In 1899 he united with the Christian church.

From 1911 to 1934, Mr. Colvin and his family lived in and near Ankeny, Polk county, after which they returned to Winterset. Five years were spent at Yale in Guthrie county, assisting his son in a garage there returning to Winterset in 1935.

During the past winter his health has been failing although he was too active for his own good. He leaves to morn his loss his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Stanfield of Ankeny, a son Harold of Winterset, two step-daughters. Mrs. Cliff Robison of Winterset and Mrs. Charles Kinney of Elkhart, 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; five bothers, one grandchild and a sister having preceded him in death.

Services were held at the Church of Christ Friday afternoon, June 5, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. H.L. Olmstead. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

Local News

The out of town relatives and friends who were here last Friday afternoon to attend the funeral services of J. R. Colvin which were held at the Church of Christ, were as follows: Charles Colvin, Westville, Oklahoma, Mrs. Finis Thurman, Mrs. Charles Brand, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Brand, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Phillips and two daughters, of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lyle, Mrs. Harry Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Melnik, and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Bell of Yale, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Kinney and family of Elkhart, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stanfield, of Ankeny.

The Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the church conducted the services at two o’clock, and he was assisted by the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
