News of Interest from St. Charles

SAM SHREEVES, FARMER, DIES AT HOME AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

Sam Shreeves, a farmer living four miles northeast of town, passed away suddenly early Saturday morning. He was stricken with paralysis about two weeks ago but seemed to be slowly improving until a short time before his death. A doctor was called but Mr. Shreeves died before he reached the home. He was about 68 years of age and is survived by his wife and two sons, Delmar and Arthur both at home, and a daughter, Mrs. Doris Cushing of Des Moines. Other immediate relatives are four sisters, Mrs. Ann Summerville and Miss Olive Shreeves of Winterset, and Mrs. J. D. Bean and Miss Lena Shreeves of Chicago. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock, at the Methodist church and burial was in the St. Charles cemetery.

News Items of Interest from St. Charles

Mrs. Ethel Shreeves came last Monday from Cheyenne, Wyoming to attend the funeral of her brother-in-law, S. R. Shreeves. Two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Bean and Miss Lena Shreeves of Chicago, also came for the funeral but returned home on Monday night.

Clanton Valley

Sam Shreeves who had a stroke two weeks ago and was greatly improved, took suddenly worse Saturday morning and soon passed away. He spent most of his life on the farm where he died except a few years in Martensdale and Des Moines.

County News – St. Charles

St. Charles and community were surprised to hear of the sudden death was Samuel R. Shreeves which occurred last Saturday morning.

Mr. Shreeves was born in Crawford township March 28, 1869 and died March 28, 1936 at his home in Jackson township, Warren county at the age of 67 years. His parents were Jonah and Elizabeth Longabaugh Shreeves who were pioneers of Madison county living on the stage road from Des Moines Winterset.

He was married to Miss Linnie Wick July 11, 1911 at Denver, Colorado, and for a year lived on a farm in southeastern Wyoming, a large farm which he had homesteaded. Then he came back to his farm near St. Charles where he was living at the time of his death.

He is survived by his widow and three children: Mrs. Doris Cushing of Des Moines and two sons, Delmar and Arthur; four sisters, Mrs. Ann Summerville and Miss Olive Shreeves of Winterset; Miss Zulema Shreeves and Mrs. Sadie Bean of Chicago. Two grandchildren and many nephews and nieces and a host of friends mourn his passing.

The cause of his death was a stroke. The first one was a few weeks ago from which he seemed to rally. He was a well-respected citizen, a good neighbor and a man of high ideals.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church here, conducted by Rev. Barker. Interment in the St. Charles cemetery.
