Mrs. George E. Smith
Minnie Grace Silverthorn, daughter of Nicholas and Janie Silverthorn was born in Madison county, Iowa, March 21, 1877 and after a series of operations at the hospital in Des Moines, she departed this life on Dec. 5, 1918, aged 41 years, 6 months and 14 days.
She was bereft of her mother when a child of 8 years and soon assumed the responsibility of caring for the parental home and her younger sisters and brothers, they being foremost in her thoughts until they had established homes of their own.She was married to George E. Smith in Winterset, Iowa, July 24, 1897. To this union were born one daughter and three sons, all of whom survive her. They are Veda Pearl, Lyle S., Karl N. and Gerald E. She also leaves to mourn their loss, besides her husband and children, two sisters and four brothers. The sisters are: Mrs. Pearl Smith, Lorimor; Mrs. Hazel Rogers, Winterset. The brothers are Elmo and Weaver, Lorimor; Daniel, Winterset and Neal of Des Moines; all of whom were present except Hazel who was absent on account of sickness.
She was converted and united with the Methodist church at Kasson in 1907 and has ever proven her Christian character in actions and words and the last letter to her children, just before she submitted to the operation, showed clearly that her chief interest was their happiness and moral welfare.
Grace was the leader of the local Red Cross of this community, ever ready to bear her portion of the great work and always striving to induce others to do their duty for this great cause. She served on the school board with rare judgment and discretion, because she felt it a duty to encourage the thought of an education. She was ever ready to give a helping hand for the up-building of the community and the caring for the suffering. She had the pleasure of knowing that her family was ever ready to respond to her wise and loving counsel.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday, Dec. 8th at 11 o'clock by Rev. ...unreadable line... interment at Macksburg cemetery.
