Mrs. John Burch Dies

Mrs. John Burch, a resident of Madison county for most of her life, died at her home in Des Moines last Friday after a serious illness of less than a week. She had been in failing health, however, for a number of years. She was nearly 79 years of age.

Mrs. Burch was the former Mary Francis Lee, daughter of Wesley Kirby Lee and Hannah Hennen Lee and was born at McComb, Illinois, on March 16, 1857. At the age of five years, she came to Iowa with her parents, making the trip in a covered wagon.

The family homesteaded in Penn township, where the girl grew to womanhood and was married to John Burch, on April 4, 1883. After a short stay at Leadville, Colorado, she and her husband returned to Madison county, where they lived until 1929, going then to Des Moines.

She had been a member of the Methodist church since girlhood.

She was the mother of seven children. One daughter died in infancy, and Nellie Burch Huglin died in 1926. She is survived by her husband; and five children: C. J. Burch and R. C. Burch of Davenport, Mrs. Myrtle Bertholf of Los Angeles, Harry E. Burch of Winterset, and Mrs. Marle Davis of Des Moines. She also leaves 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. M. R. Talley of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. H. L. Olmstead of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
