Thursday, February 16, 1933Sarah Catherine Newman, daughter of George and Nancy Newman, was born Feb. 28, 1843, and departed this life Feb. 9, 1933, aged 89 years, 11 months and 9 days.
She was born in Park County, Indiana, but while still a child came with her parents to Dallas County, Iowa. She was married to Washington Francis in 1863. To this union were born five children, Bruce, Owen, Carrie, John and Will.
One son, Owen, died at the age of 10 years and her husband Dec. 31, 1920.
She leaves to mourn her three sons: Bruce, of Minneapolis; John, of Carstairs, Alberta, Canada; and Will, of Long Beach, California; one daughter, Carrie Brown of Earlham, with whom she has made her home the past 15 years; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as a host of friends.
Her entire life has been devoted in service to God and her fellowmen, and she was never so contented as when doing something for someone. Even to the very last she wanted to be helpful.
Her faith in the Savior was most vivid and steadfast, and for many years she has lived in the hope that he might soon come again. When able she was most anxious to attend church, and during the past two years until very recently she made every effort to hear the radio service.
Services for the deceased were conducted Saturday afternoon at two o’clock with the Rev. Peter Bock officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery.
