HOCKETT RITES HELD THURSDAY

Deceased Had Been Resident of This Community Since 1864, Coming in Pioneer Days.

Lindley Julian Hockett, son of Joel and Ann Hockett, was born near Salem, Iowa October 24, 1857. The family moved to Madison County in 1864 and settled the homestead where John Walton now resides.

When Mr. Hockett came to this section there was no town of Earlham nor any railroad. There were no houses between the Hockett homestead and where Earlham now is located. Their trading points were Adel and Winterset.

The family united with the North Branch Friends meeting which met for worship near where the North Branch Cemetery is located east of Earlham. The children, Lindley and his brothers and sisters were birthright members of the North Branch meeting.

On October 16, 1884 he was united in marriage to Olive Abigal Stubbs. To them were born three children, two boys and a girl, all of whom preceded their parents in death, the boys dying in infancy. The only surviving near relatives are: a brother, Sylvester Hockett and a granddaughter, Olive Hockett.

It was the expressed wish of Mr. Hockett to be “at rest” after the trials and tribulations, the joys and triumphs of life. He is now at rest so far as the cares of this world are concerned. The pioneer has departed on the last great adventure.

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon from the Earlham Friends Church, with Rev. Millard Jones officiating. Burial was in the Earlham Cemetery.
