Sam Thompson, 72, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 5 at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg. A visitation will be held 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 4 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset; where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Peru Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherri (Mike) Young of Winterset and Laura (Eric) Forret of Urbandale; two sons, Rich (Cheryl) McKinney of West Des Moines and Jo (Fona) Holtry of St. Charles; a sister, Phyllis Kirkland of Winterset; a brother, John (Bette) Thompson of Bolivar, MO; nine grandchildren, Amie Thompson, Noah Munoz, Hannah Munoz, Gabe (Amanda) Green, Jacob Green, Mazie Woods, Mikailyn Holtry, Linda Mae Holtry, and Maddie Jo Holtry; one great-grandchild, Allura Duffy; and special friend, Sandy Rippenkroeger of West Des Moines.

SAM THOMPSON, PATTERSON

Sam Thompson, 72, of Patterson died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg. A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Peru Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice.

Sam was born Nov. 1, 1939, in Des Moines, the son of Jay C. and Mary Alice (Catterlin) Thompson. He graduated from Macksburg High School in 1958 and later married Marjorie Stumpf. His second marriage was to Linda Dillinger.

Sam worked for Martin Marietta in various positions during his 33-year tenure and his retirement in 2002. Following his retirement, Sam has worked with the Winterset Parks and Rec Department, working as recently as two weeks ago. He was a member of the Patterson United Methodist Church and the Hitching Post Grill.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda; and a sister, Evelyn Harden.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherri Young of Winterset and Laura Forret of Urbandale; two sons, Rich McKinney of West Des Moines and Jo Holtry of St. Charles; a sister, Phyllis Kirkland of Winterset; a brother, John Thompson of Bolivar, Mo.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special friend, Sandy Rippenkroeger of West Des Moines.
