Ruth Harrell, 85, of Creston, formerly of the Thayer area, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 5-7:30 p.m. Memorial may be directed to the Greater Regional Hospice House or the New Lorimorian.
Ruth Louise Reed was born April 1, 1926, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Essie (Bennett) and Clarence Reed. She graduated from Hamburg High School with the class of 1944. She went to work for the local telephone company as an operator, transferring to Winterset, where she met her future husband, Robert Harrell. They were married March 6, 1949. Bob and Ruth farmed near Winterset until purchasing their home place north of Thayer in 1959. They remained on the farm until moving to Creston in 2007. Ruth was being one of the initial co-editors of the New Lorimorian.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Struble and Jane McCann, both of Creston; and a son, Rick Harrell of Afton; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death her husband Bob, and all of her siblings.
