GENE BASS, WINTERSET

Gene Bass, 94, of Winterset died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to his family for a future designation.

Gene was born on June 7, 1917, at Winterset to DeWitt and Mary (Smith) Bass. Shortly after graduating Winterset High School, Gene married Velma Fleming on July 3, 1940, at Winterset. To this union were born two children, Linda and Mary Jo. He had been a lifetime resident of Winterset and a lifetime farmer. Raising American Saddle bred horses and draft horses was a passion of Gene’s. He also enjoyed family dinners, playing cards, singing and dancing, and get togethers with friends. Gene had been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had led the committee for the construction of the church hall and rectory at the church’s former location.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Linda Hupton of Des Moines and Mary Jo (George) Baitinger of Albion; grandchildren, Matthew (Naomi) Hupton, Nicholas (Tara) Hupton, Joseph (Sara) Baitinger, David Baitinger, Gina (Chad Johnson) Hupton, Laura (David) Hommel, and Sara (Jay) Duncan; and great grandchildren, Ella Hommel, Andrew Hommel, Daniel Hommel, Jack Baitinger, Charles Baitinger, Abbey Hupton, Neville Hupton, Veda Hupton, Tyler Hupton, and Siena Hupton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, DeWitt and Mary (Smith) Bass; wife, Velma; brothers, George Bass, Edward Bass, Charles Bass, William Bass, and Francis Bass; and great grandson, James Baitinger.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
