A. F. Husted Dies at Dexter

Funeral services for A. Frank Husted, a former well-known Madison county auctioneer and livestock buyer, were held Monday afternoon, July 28, from the Dexter Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Husted died July 24 at the Dexter hospital. He was 78 years of age.

A son of Thomas E. and Ollie Gilliam Husted, he was born near Peru on March 23, 1897.

Mr. Husted served in France during World War I with the famed Company A of the Rainbow division.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lenore Myers of Dexter, and by a brother Eugene Husted of Carlisle, Iowa.

Officiating at the funeral Monday were the Rev. Jerry Evelsizer of Dexter and the Rev. David McKay of Springfield, Missouri. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Winterset V.F.W. was in the Peru cemetery.

Frank’s mother died in 1898 when he was just one year old and he was reared by a step-mother, Lucinda Foster Husted.

He attended the rural school near his home in Walnut township. At the age of sixteen years, he began his lifetime profession of auctioneering. He was graduated from Jones National Auctioneering School in Chicago in 1915.

Returning to auctioneering after the war, Frank lived in the St. Charles area before moving to Marshalltown, where he conducted sales. He also conducted sales in Indianola, Winterset, Adel and Perry. For years he was an independent cattle buyer. He also bought cattle for Rath in Waterloo and for Sea---- and Staffords in Springfield, Missouri.

He was married to Lenore Irene Myers on December 13, 1964 at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. They made their home in Bull Shoals, Arkansas, then lived in Springfield, Missouri for twelve years before moving to Dexter in March, 1972.

Alonzo Frank Husted, son of Ollie A. Gilliam and Thomas Eldon Husted, was born near Peru, Madison County, Iowa on March 23, 1897. He passed away at the Dexter Hospital early Thursday morning July 24th after a long illness.

Frank’s mother died in 1898 when he was just one year old so he was reared by a stepmother, Lucinda Foster Husted.

Frank attended the rural school near his home in Walnut township. At the age of 16 he began his lifetime profession of auctioneering, from Jones National Auctioneering School in Chicago in 1915.

On April 9, 1917, Frank, as a member of the National Guard at Winterset, was with the renowned Rainbow Division during World War I. His service extended throughout Europe and ended with honor on January 19, 1919. For many years he attended the reunions of the Rainbow Division and was one of the few remaining veterans of Company A.

Returning to auctioneering after the war, Frank lived in the St. Charles area before moving to Marshalltown where he conducted sales. He also conducted sales in Indianola, Winterset, Adel and Perry. For years he was an independent cattle buyer. He also bought cattle for Rath in Waterloo and for Seatons and Staffords in Springfield, Missouri.

Frank was married to Lenore Irene Meyers on December 13, 1954 at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. They made their home in Bull Shoals, Arkansas then lived in Springfield, Missouri for 12 years before coming to Dexter in March 1972 for retirement.

Although Frank was a longtime member of the Elm Grove Methodist Church in Scott township near Peru, he belonged to the Christian Church in Springfield and this past spring transferred his membership to the First United Presbyterian Church of Dexter.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Eldon, one step-sister, Edith Allen, and one step-brother, Frank Childers; also four half-brothers, Leslie, Forrest, Clyde and Virgil. Besides his wife, Lenore, Frank is survived by one brother Eugene Husted and his wife, Lois, of Carlisle, Iowa.

Relatives and friends from South St. Paul, Minnesota, Mason City, Grundy Center, Albia, Carlisle, Sigourney, Grinnell in Iowa were here for services at 10:00 a.m. July 28th with burial at Peru, Iowa. Services were conducted by Rev. Jerry Evelsizer and Rev. David McKay of Springfield, Missouri.
