PAST CONGRESSMAN JOHN HANSEN DIES

Funeral Services were held here last Thursday for John R. Hansen of Winterset, a former Congressman and member of the Iowa Highway Comission.

Mr. Hansen died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on Monday, September 23, following a brief illness. He was 73 years of age.

John R. Hansen was born at Manning, Iowa on August 24, 1901, the son of H. P. and Laura Karstens Hansen. He was married to Mary Louise Oshtoff at Lincoln, Nebraska on June 22, 1927, and was preceded in death by her on March 13, 1967.

Mr. Hansen was married to Dorothy Meyer of Winterset on May 19, 1969, and had resided for the past five years in Winterset and Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Mr. Hansen was owner and manager of Dultmeier Manufacturing Company, a farm equipment firm in Manning, from 1932 to 1964.

Mr. Hansen served as a member of the Iowa Board of Control from 1959 to 1960, and as Western Iowa Area Manager Savings Bond Division, U. S. Treasury Department, from 1962 to 1964.

He was elected a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa's Seventh Congressional District in 1964 and served in Congress for two years. Mr. Hansen was then appointed a member of the Iowa Highway Commission, a post he held from 1967 to 1969.

Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Hansen was active in Rotary Club and Masonic Lodge and Shrine activities.

Other civic organizations and activities of which Mr. Hansen was a part included the Iowa Mental Health Association; the Iowa Executive Council of the Governor's Commission on Alcoholism; the National Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association; the Izaak Walton League; the Boy Scouts of America; and the Carroll County Red Cross.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Winterset; and by two sons, Robert W. Hansen of Omaha and Jack Hansen of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are five grand children, three brothers: Howard Hansen of California; Walter F. Hansen of Omaha; and Erwin H. Hansen of Manning, Iowa; and two sisters: Grace E. Hansen of Omaha and Irene Fitz of Council Bluffs.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. last Thursday, September 26, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset, with the Rev. Paul Bousfield and the Rev. Newton Coughenour officiating. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery at Manning, Iowa, with graveside services held there at 3:00 p.m. Thursday.

Honorary casket bearers included the Honorable Harold Hughes, Unites States Senator from Iowa; the Honorable Neal Smith, U.S. Congressman from Iowa; the Honorable Stanley Greigg; the Honorable Hershel Loveless; Kenneth Glass; and Donald Norberg.
