Ramona J. Mahoney, Polk City

Ramona J. Mahoney, 81, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2011 of COPD at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A memorial service will be Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 2 p.m., in the chapel at Ankeny Memorial Gardens(4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). Family will greet guests beginning at 1:15 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the memorial service, where the cremains of both Ramona and her husband Bill, will be buried together on the 61st anniversary of their marriage.

Ramona was born August 30, 1929 in Gilbert to J. Rolla and Bertha Beavers and grew up in Collins. After high school graduation, she moved to Des Moines, married William (Bill) Mahoney in 1950, and worked for Case Company and Mail Me Monday Bookkeeping. She and Bill enjoyed bowling, square dancing, bridge club, family camping trips, and taking leadership roles in their children's activities. In later years, they enjoyed golfing, boating, and traveling. Before retiring in 2000, Ramona owned a number of businesses, including a Mail Me Monday franchise and a Dairy Sweet in Winterset and J&M's Malt Shop in Grimes. She and Bill also managed the Prairie Village Retirement Complex in Grimes.

She is survived by four children: Gale Kruger of Dalian, China, Dale (Diane) Kruger of Cassville, WI, Sheila (Dennis) Adamson of Ankeny, and Dennis (Margaret) Mahoney of Cypress, TX; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Rex Beavers of Collins. Her husband, Bill Mahoney and her brother, Reid Beavers, preceded her in death. Ramona was also blessed to have the opportunity to spend her last months in her home with wonderful caregivers from Right At Home.
