Bernice Laura Burk, 85, of Truro died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola.
Bernice, the daughter of Walter Herman Gragert and Hauke Margueritte (Goos) Gragert, was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb. Bernice graduated from Ogden High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Chester William Burk on July 12, 1961, at Salex, Iowa. Bernice worked as a dietician for a number of years at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines and also worked for Earlham Health Care and sold Stanley products. She was involved with Jesus Right Hand in New Virginia and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Martensdale.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Katherine; a brother, Harold Gragert; a sister-in-law, Margie Gragert; and a grandson, Kenneth Burk.
She is survived by her husband, Chester “Bill” Burk, Sr. of Truro; children, Linda Vee Lemieux of Lakewood, Colo., Ernest W. Froehlich of Lake Wales, Fla., Laura Kitner of New Virginia, Jenny R. Jacobe of Truro, Chester “Bill” Burk, Jr. of Creston; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Elmer Gragert of Kansas City, Mo., Clarence Gragert of Sikeston, Mo.; sister, Irene Goldsmith of Des Moines; other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at Young Cemetery in Truro on Aug. 8 with Rev. Fayonne Tooman officiating. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
Arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Home.
