Susan Jane Garmatz Jordan was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Jan. 19th, 1947, the daughter of Robert and Florence (Gruber) and sister to Ellen and John. She died unexpectedly on Monday, September 27th, 2010, in Walnut Creek, California.
Susan lived a full and blessed life to age 63. Susan was baptized on February 16, 1947 at Hope Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Missouri. Susan graduated from Seward High School, Seward, Nebraska in 1964. High school activities included gymnastics and she played the young servant, sang in French, in the school play, South Pacific.
As an adult she worked many years for the Lutheran Layman League in St. Louis. Susan also worked for McCarthy Brothers Construction Company in St. Louis. She met Richard Jordan in St. Louis while he was attending Concordia Seminary. They married in St. Louis in June, 1981. Richard's first Call was to a Church in Sisserton, South Dakota. They also served in Ocheyedan, Iowa and lastly in Van Meter, Iowa. Susan was a loyal and faithful wife. While living in South Dakota, Richard and Susan rode a Harley to Canada.
She was known for her homemade bread and always had large bag of flour in her kitchen. She taught herself how to crochet and made many lovely doilies. She worked part time in the library in Ocheyedan, Iowa. She was the family historian, and could tell you what each family member was doing and where they lived. Susan was very involved in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) and attended many State & National conventions. In Van Meter, Iowa she worked for the election board and went to caucuses where she saw President Bush. In her last years in Van Meter, Susan was a caretaker of our brother, John, who had Alzheimer's until his death in February 2009.
Richard and Susan moved to California in May 2010.
Memorial service is Saturday, April 30, 2011 in rural Van Meter, Iowa at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11 AM led by Pastor Arlo Melz.
Transcriber's Note: Burial of cremains were at the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery near Van Meter,
Iowa, where her husband last served as Pastor.
