DALE STANLEY, Winterset

Dale Stanley, 96, of Winterset died at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset on Thursday, May 19, 2011.

A funeral services was held on Monday, May 23, at Worthington United Methodist Church in rural Earlham, with Pastor Bob Epperson officiating. Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery.

Dale was born the son of Benjamin (Frank) and Nettie (Clague) Stanley on the family farm in rural Penn Township in Madison County on Jan. 28, 1915. He received his education at Madison #8, Earlham and Winterset Schools. He worked part-time delivering mail by horseback for the Earlham Post Office and farmed with his father until his father’s death in 1969. Dale and Hazel Enfield were married at Hazel’s family farm near Worthington Church on Jan. 11, 1942. Dale and Hazel farmed until their retirement in 2007. Dale was a member of the Worthington Church, the Madison County Farm Bureau and the Madison County Cattleman’s Association. Dale and Hazel were named Winterset School’s “Fans Of The Year” for their support of the school teams.

Dale was preceded in death a brother, Glen Stanley; a sister, Lucille Smith; a brother-in-law, James Smith; and a nephew, Richard Smith.

Dale is survived by his wife, Hazel Stanley of Winterset; his sons, Dean of Earlham and Don of Winterset; sister-in-law Marie Stanley of Winterset; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Dale Stanley was born the son of Benjamin (Frank) and Nettie (Clague) Stanley on the family farm in rural Penn Township, Madison County, Iowa on January 28, 1915. He died at the Westbridge Care Center in Winterset on May 19, 2011 at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Dale received his education at Madison #8, Earlham and Winterset Schools. In his early years Dale was an exceptional artist. He made numerous pencil sketches of people, animals, etc., but decided to go into farming. He worked part-time delivering mail by horseback for the Earlham Post Office and farmed with his father until his father’s death in 1969. Dale and Hazel Enfield were married at Hazel’s family farm near Worthington Church o January 11, 1942. This union was blessed with two sons: Franklin Dean and Steven Don.

Dale and Hazel farmed until their retirement in 2007. Dale was a member of the Worthington Church, the Madison Co. Farm Bureau and the Madison Co. Cattleman’s Assoc. He was an avid Iowa State Fan and traveled to many football games as well as some Oklahoma State Bowl games. Dale and Hazel were named Winterset School’s “Fans of the Year” for their support of the school teams. Dale and Hazel traveled to Alaska on a cruise and took many bank bus trips around the country. Dale continued his pencil art by drawing pictures on the walls of the barn, and other buildings on the farm. He also recorded sports scores on the walls of these same buildings in numerous locations.

Dale is survived by his wife Hazel Stanley of Winterset; son Dean Stanley and wife Earline of Earlham; son Don and wife Kay of Winterset; sister-in-law Marie Stanley of Winterset; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23 at Worthington United Methodist Church in rural Earlham. Pastor Bob Epperson officiated. Heather Jamison was the organist. Heather Jamison, David D. Kuhn and Gideon Gallo were soloists. Pallbearers were Chris Stanley, Cole Stanley, Colton Stanley, Mike Stanley, Alan Stanley, Kyle Stanley and Clint Stanley. Honorary pallbearers were David Clark, Barry Trindle, Ron Berdine, Neal Hovick, Mary Darby and George Bown. Interment was at Earlham Cemetery in Earlham. Professional arrangements by Kuhn Funeral Homes.
