Marguerite Powers, 89, of Winterset died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Care Center South in Winterset. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Rev. Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
Marguerite was born on June 25, 1921, at Madison County, Iowa to Stanley and Grace (Chase) Shaw. After growing up in the Winterset area and graduating from Winterset High School in 1939, she was married Maurice Powers on July 1, 1941, at Winterset. While being a lifetime resident of Winterset, Marguerite had worked as a bookkeeper, nurses aide, and deputy Clerk of Court for Madison County. Some of the numerous organizations and clubs she had been a member of were the Gray Ladies of the Red Cross, Colonial Guild, American Legion Auxiliary, volunteer at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, various bridge clubs, was a lifetime member of the Madison County Historical Society, had served as a board member on the Winterset Cemetery Association, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and Sarah Circle. She enjoyed playing golf, all types of needlework, and was an avid reader. In 1998, Marguerite was named Woman of the Year through the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
Marguerite is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Jim) Cole of Hayward, Wisc., and Diane Truckenbrod of Winterset; son, Mark (Brenda) Powers of Hiawatha; grandchildren, Julie (Bryan) Koontz, Lori (Mike) Olmstead, Jason (Tammy) Truckenbrod, Adam (Sarah) Cole, Joseph (Kasey) Powers, and Matthew Powers; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Koontz, Travis Truckenbrod, Stephanie Olmstead, Brady Koontz, Dylan Koontz, Josh Olmstead, Caitlyn Truckenbrod, Caleb Powers, Carly Cole, Gabriel Powers, Leah Cole and baby Powers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Grace (Chase) Shaw; husband, Maurice Powers; son-in-law, Richard Truckenbrod; and brother, Gene Shaw.
Memorials given to the family will be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Fund or Middle River Hospice.
