ROBERT "BOB" CAMP, Winterset

Robert William Camp was born May 31, 1927, in Madison County on a rural farm near Peru, Iowa. He was the sixth child of Harvey L. and Dorothy Martin Camp. He passed from this life on May 14, 2011, a few days before his 84th birthday.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, May 18) at the Winterset Community Church with Pastor Scott O’Conner officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Union Chapel Cemetery in Madison County. Memorials may be directed to his family for a future designation.

As a small child he lived on various farms in Clarke and Madison Counties. He attended Prairie Grove, a rural school in Clarke County, until his family moved to their farm in Madison County in 1936. He then enrolled in the Patterson Consolidated School and graduated as a member of the Class of 1945. He participated in athletic activities and played on both the baseball and basketball teams; he also played on the Patterson town baseball team for several summers.

Bob, as he was commonly known, served in the U.S. Army, being drafted shortly after he graduated from high school. His term of service was from Aug. 29, 1945, until Dec. 12, 1946, when he was honorably discharged.

Bob was united in marriage to Mary Lovella Simpson on Aug. 19, 1960, at Bethany, Mo. They were the parents of six children. Mary died on Sept. 30,1983. Bob farmed the Camp farm his lifetime until moving to Winterset. He did various other jobs including working at the former Solar Aircraft in Des Moines, being a local bar owner, and the latest being with the Commission for the Blind in Des Moines from which he retired in 1993. He was an outdoor person who enjoyed farm life, animals, birds, and gardening – both the food products and flowers. He was an avid sports fan, always cheering for the Atlanta Braves. He lived on the same farm home from the time he was nine years old until he moved to Madison Square in Winterset in 2008.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his son Tim, and an infant son Michael. Others preceding him were his parents; his granddaughter, Linnea Camp; siblings, Marvin, Dan, Marilyn Jane and Mary Nadine Camp.

Surviving him are his children Bill (Margo) Camp of Stover, Mo., Rick (Judy) Camp of Broken Arrow, Okla., Jayne (Tony) Maxwell of Winterset, Kimberly (Martin) Steenhoek of West Des Moines, Karin (Ed) Masterson of Runnells, and his daughter-in-law, Glenna Camp of Winterset. Other survivors are his 18 grandchildren, Mike, Bryan, Jay, Danielle, Dustin, Logan, Landon, Lucas, Lauren, Jeni, Stacey, Chasity, Sara, Ashley, Amber, Sierra, Shianne and Autumn; 11 great-grandchildren, Mikey, Haylee, Mallory, Abby, Josie, Conner, Faithlyn, Max, Riley, Airiana, and Kale; his brothers, Marion Camp of Lacey, Wash., and Glenn Camp (Diana) of Antioch, Ill.; his sisters, Evelyn Camp and Helen Armstrong, both of Indianola; several cousins; many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends.
