Lucy J. Walker was born on March 31, 1868, and died at her home in this city on Oct. 27, her age being 62 years, 7 months and 6 days.

She was married to Charles McCleary Feb. 21, 1877, and to this marriage seven children were born, four daughters and three sons, as follows: Mrs. Josie Martin, Patterson; Mrs. Edith Pyers, this city; Mrs. Nellie Scarborough, Des Moines; Mrs. Adelaide Mills, this city; Alfred, Des Moines; Robert, California and Walker, Des Moines. All these were present at the funeral except Robert of California.

She was the granddaughter of David and Mariah Barrow, early settlers in Union township, Madison county. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Winterset, and had the Christians’ hope of a reward beyond the grave.

She was a great sufferer for many years, but bore her suffering with fortitude and Christian patience. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her and leaves many relatives and friends to mourn her departure.

The funeral was held from the Jefferson church, Dr. N. C. Carpenter, her pastor, delivering the sermon in the presence of many friends, neighbors and relatives. The burial was in the Jefferson cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Chas. McCleary

Following years of semi-invalidism, attended by much suffering, Mrs. Charles McCleary died at her home on Oct. 27. She lived in Madison county during her lifetime and was descended from early settlers in Union township, the David Barrows family.

Mrs. McCleary was a noble woman of rare Christian character, giving to her family and church, a devotion far beyond her physical strength.

Her husband, also four daughters and three sons, survive.

Dr. N. C. Carpenter conducted funeral services in Jefferson church, followed by burial in Jefferson cemetery.
