James Murphy of Monroe Township, Dies Suddenly, Body Discovered by a Neighbor

James Murphy, a Monroe township farmer, living near Ord, died very suddenly last Thursday night. He had been in his usual health and on Wednesday assisted a neighbor, Wm. Hess, with some farm work.

On Thursday morning he did not put in his usual appearance and on going to the house, Mr. Hess, made the discovery that he had died during the night. Heart disease is supposed to have caused his death.

Mr. Murphy moved here from Jasper county some years ago. Since the death of his wife about two years ago, she had lived alone. He was well regarded by his neighbors as an upright man and a good citizen.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, and burial in the Winterset cemetery.

JIMMIE MURPHY

The neighborhood was shocked to hear of the death of Uncle Jimmie Murphy, as he was called by all who knew him. His death came Friday and the funeral was held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the Blue Front church, conducted by Rev. A. D. Mann. The remains were shipped to Linville and laid to rest by the side of his wife who died in 1914.

JAMES MURPHY

James Murphy was born in Ohio, April 5, 1852, died at his home in Monroe township, Madison county, Iowa, Sept. 7, 1917, aged 65 years, 4 months and 2 days.

In his early manhood he moved to Newton, Iowa, which was his home until his removal to Madison county in the spring of 1908. He was a member of a family of eight, two of these survive him: Cynthia West and William Murphy of Ohio. On March 11, 1908 he was united in marriage to Jennie Shahan, who died Feb. 20, 1914. He and his wife united with the Church of Christ in Christian Union at New Hope, in November, 1910, and remained faithful until they were called to the Great Beyond. Since his companion's death, he has lived alone.

As he was not seen the morning of Sept. 7th, Will Hess and E. E. Bertholf, upon investigation, found that death had come to him while he slept. Uncle Jimmie, as he was familiarly called, could count his friends by the score. His genial spirit, kind heart and unassuming manner won the affection of both young and old. He will be greatly missed. Another good friend and neighbor has gone to his eternal home.

Funeral sermon by his pastor, Rev. A. D. Mann, was followed by the funeral ceremony by the I.O.O.F.; No. 163 of Winterset, Iowa, in command of O. E.Beach, past noble grand.
