Death of Sam H. Shoults

Van Meter - March 7 - Special

Sam Shoults passed away at at his home early Monday morning, March 7 after an illness of a couple of weeks of the flu.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Alva Driscoll and Mrs. Oscar Marquardt and one son, Harry Shoults all of Van Meter.

The funeral will be held Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Shoults have both been ill with the flu. Mrs. Shoults has been able to be up part of the time, but Mr. Shoults became much worse and word was received Monday morning that he passed away.

Van Meter -

Funeral services for Samuel H. Shoults were held at the United Brethren church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. A. Elliott, assisted by the Rev. S. C. Peterson. The interment was at the Union Chapel cemetery.

Samuel H. Shoults was born September 1, 1851 in Tippicanoe county, Indiana. When he was seven years old his mother died and he came to Iowa and made his home with an aunt in Warren county.

March 5, 1876 he was married to Elizabeth Fugate of Concord, Indiana, and they came to Madison county where they where they settled on a farm south of Van Meter, which has been their home continuously since, until a year ago when they moved to Van Meter.

Mr. Shoults had been in poor health for several years. A two week illness of influenza caused his death, Monday morning, March 7th.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Alva Driscoll and Mrs. Oscar Marquardt and on son, Harry Shoults, all of Van Meter, one brother in Oklahoma and four grandchildren.

OBITUARY - Samuel H. Shoults

Samuel H. Shoults was born September 1, 1851 in Tippecanoe county, Indiana. When he was seven years old his mother died and he came to Iowa and made his home with an aunt in Warren county.

March 5, 1876 he was married to Elizabeth Fugate of Concord, Indiana, and came to Madison county, settling on what is known as the Shoults farm southeast of Van Meter, where he lived until a year ago, when, with his wife, he moved into Van Meter.

Four children were born to them, all living except one, Maggie, who died in childhood.

For years Mr. Shoults had been in poor health. Two weeks ago he became ill with influenza and died at three o’clock Monday morning, march 7, aged 80 years, 6 months and 6 days. He was a member of the United Brethren church at Union Chapel.

He leaves his wife, Elizabeth Shoults; one son, Harry and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Marquardt and Mrs. Mattie Driscoll, all of Van Meter, also four grandchildren, one brother who lives in Oklahoma, and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held in the United Brethren church in Van Meter Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. Elliott, assisted by Rev. Peterson, Officiating; burial was at Union chapel cemetery.
