PHYLLIS NEWTON LORTON, HOUSTON, TEXAS

Phyllis I. Newton Lorton, of Houston, Texas, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at her residence.

Phyllis was born July 8, 1915, in Winterset, to Glen and Myra Newton. She attended Winterset High, then worked at the Madison County Courthouse, before marrying Arthur F. Lorton in 1939. She and her family moved several times over the years, ending up in the Houston area in 1950, where she lived the rest of her life.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her former husband, Arthur, sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Farris Breeding, brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Pauline Newton, and sons-in-law, Edwin Burnett and Billy Pollard.

She is survived by daughters Linda Burnett and Judy Pollard, and son and daughter-in-law, Tres Lorton and Nancy Prosser, as well as grandchildren Blaire Chapman and husband, Brian, Sarah Pollard and Shelley Pollard, and great-grandchildren Jordyn and Avery Chapman. Phyllis also leaves behind nephews Larry, Wayne and Rick Breeding, and Robert, Richard and Keith Newton.

Phyllis was a loving daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She offered unconditional love and support to her family and friends throughout her life, and will be very much missed by them all.

A memorial service will be conducted in Phyllis’’ honor at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 16335 El Camino Real, Houston TX 77058, at 2 p.m. on April 16, with a reception to follow. Her ashes will be interred at a later date at Winterset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in Phyllis’’ name to the Church Library Fund at Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

PHYLLIS LORTON, Houston, Tx.

Phyllis Newton Lorton, of Houston, Texas, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011.

Phyllis was born July 8, 1915 in Winterset, Iowa to Glen and Myra Newton. She lived in Iowa until her marriage to Arthur F. Lorton in 1939. She moved to Houston in 1950 and continued to live there until moving to Clear Lake City in 1977.

Phyllis was a former employee of University of Houston Clear Lake and was a longtime member of Clear Lake Methodist Church. Early in her life, Phyllis was a leader of both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Most of her life she was involved in many aspects of sports. Although she played only basketball in high school, she was a fan of many sports, and certainly had her favorites-in particular the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets and the University of Texas at Austin. In her later years, she enjoyed many activities of the Sunday school and Sunshine Club at CLUMC. She also was a very talented seamtress and an avid crossword puzzle fan. Phyllis was preceded in death by her former husband, Arthur, sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Farris Breeding, brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Pauline Newton, and sons-in-law, Edwin Burnett and Billy Pollard. She is survived by daughters Linda Burnett of Middletown, NY and Judy Pollard of Clear Lake, and son and daughter-in-law, Tres Lorton and Nancy Prosser of Alexandria, VA, as well as grandchildren Blaire Chapman and husband, Brian, Sarah Pollard and Shelley Pollard, all of Houston, and great-grandchildren Jordyn and Avery Chapman. Phyllis also leaves nephews Wayne, Larry and Rick Breeding, and Robert, Richard and Keith Newton.
