DON CLARK, AFTON

Donald Clark, 80, of Afton died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials may be made to the Afton United Methodist Church or Afton Community Center.

Donald Lee Clark was born Oct. 27, 1930, in rural Afton to Bernice Sarah (Stroup) Clark and Ren Clark. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1948. On June 25, 1950, Don was united in marriage to Phyllis Maxine Bailey in Prescott, Iowa. They lived southeast of Afton where he farmed and worked as a custodian for the Thayer School District. He later worked at Spahn and Rose Lumber in Afton for 20 years and worked two years at Tama. In 1976, Don bought the Western Auto in Winterset and had Don’’s Bicycle Sales and Service and later Clark’’s New and Used Furniture for 15 years. Don retired in 2001 and moved to Afton. Don was a member of the Afton United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death a brother, Rex Leo Clark.

Don is survived by his wife, Phyllis Clark of Afton; three daughters: Debra Mathes of Afton, Barbara Clark of Urbandale and Lori Clark of Winterset; a son, Rodney Clark of Osceola; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
